Dear List
calories are a measure of energy released in the process of oxidation.
Dung has practically no nutritional value for the methanogens. Human
food, on the other hand yields large quantity of biogas. So I used to
advocate the use of high calorie food to be used as feedstock till I
realised that the feedstock is not oxidised at all in a biogas plant.
In fact, the biogas producing organisms reduce the feedstock by
extracting oxygen from it. So how does one assess the quality of
feedstock that is fed into the biogas plant. Digestibility is one
criterion. Can the oxygen content of the feedstock be a crucial
factor?
