In fact, the owners of high output diesels (in pickup trucks) generally
are told "Do not exceed 1,300° F under any conditions, and run below
1,000° F if you want your engine to last." Often aircraft engines run
below 600° C for just that reason, aluminum alloys degrade above 1,000°
F and that is not good for aluminum heads! CHT is usually MUCH lower
than EGT, but at or near valve seats, it is higher than where CHT is
normally gauged.
Remember, this advice is often very conservative so the warranty is
cheaper. Also, losing an engine at the wrong time in an aircraft is not
a good thing!
Ahead of a turbocharger the EGT is usually higher than after it.
