[Greenbuilding] "Average" cost of household energy

Is there any website/organization that provides basic data on what typical household energy usage and cost are? I live in an energy efficient house where energy costs are low, but during the winter folks who live here will sometimes question the higher cost of energy use and why we use more. 

Sometimes the question of energy usage translates into a belief that there's something wrong with the house! And I want to put together some basic data so that housemates can understand energy usage and why our house is cheaper than most. Even energy efficient homes use more energy in the winter and, hence, have higher utility costs.
