Before we did the insulation, we used 90 tubes of caulk and 20 cans of foam to deal with air leak issues. 1548 sq ft house.

And of course with more insulation you are also working on reducing air leakage through draftproofing, right?

Well I third this motion. I have always felt that massive class action lawsuits should be filed against architects and designers for malpractice given the low levels of insulation so popular in these united States.

One of the unexpected benefits of our insulation project, coupled with our insulated interior window shutters, was the sound effect, as in we live 22 blocks from downtown OKC, close to I-235, I-40, and major north-south and east-west railroads. That's a lot of urban noise, 24/7/365. we notice it a lot less with our thicker walls and r-20 window insulation.

I often want to just answer questions like this with "you need more insulation".

Proper insulation levels would remove both the need for a fan, and the need for a set-back thermostat.

      What the man says.

In fact this response seems so often to be apt, not just in this instance. More insulation solves or reduces so many problems (even as it can, in some cases, add new ones).
