The kitchen range in my home has a built-in downdraft exhaust so I don't
have a range hood as such... but I do have a "simple lever action"
operated closure for the 6 inch diameter exhaust duct.

What I did was make an 8" square, insulated (2" XPS, covered with sheet
metal) panel that slides up and down in sheet metal channels (two sides
and bottom edge) with a 6" dia. (sheet metal) take-off over the channel
assembly, all attached to a piece of 3/8" plywood which is screwed/sealed
over the wall penetration.

It is essentially the same idea as a "blast gate" assembly that is made
for woodworking shop dust collection/exhaust systems, except better
insulated.

A short length of 0.25" all-thread extends from the folded channel in the
top edge of the sheet metal cover of the sliding insulated panel up to and
through an insert between the wall and the rear of the range to which a
T-handle carved out of a piece of black cherry is attached.

Pull up on the handle to open the exhaust vent, push handle back down
flush with the insert panel to close when the exhaust fan to the outdoors
is not turned on.

The position of the wooden handle serves as a visual reminder as to
whether the blast gate is open or closed when turning the exhaust fan
on/off but a gizmologist might want to wire up a switch for the fan to be
tripped by the lever mechanism which opens/closes the insulated flap.

Off-topic PS: I've not been receiving List mail for a couple or few weeks
and in looking in the List archives to see what was up, caught Corwyn's
thread where he mentioned that someone said that it was not possible to
heat a house in a Cold Climate on a half cord of firewood. Could someone
point me to the message where the original comment was made pliz ?
Just wondering about the specifics of that dictum. ie face cords or bush
cords ? Hardwood or softwood ? How many HDD/yr climate ? How big or small
of a house ? Target temperature ? etc.)
