[Greenbuilding] passive house: a fresh look from PHIUS

adding to John's documentation of low tech solutions for controlling solar
gain--I saw another case of otherwise conventional looking wood louvered
shutters--but with tip-out louvered panels in the lower portion of each
shutter--at the MacRae house in Wilmington, NC. it's a Tudoresque shingle
style house designed by Henry Bacon, built in 1902.

Bacon's youth was spent in Wilmington, but his career began in Boston,
where he worked for firms including McKim, Meade, and White. This raises
the question whether the tip-out shutter was a widespread practice, or if
it was particular to the NE--or of the muggy tidewater climate. it's not
particularly warm here, but perspiration was pouring down my back while
touring the district--so I would guess the latter, in a place where
capturing the slightest breeze might provide the difference between misery
and mild discomfort.
