Reuben & John: Thank you. The reason a hot water consumption study was hard to find is because U.S. DOE-funded studies were kept secret. When I posted links to one of them @
http://www.gfxtechnology.com/bundles.html, DOE officials became bent out of shape because it's illegal to conceal federally-funded reports. This December 6, 1996 AD Little report is entitled "Electric Water Heating Situation Analysis, Final Report to EEI/DOE" and covers 5 U.S. Climate Zones, source energy, gas/solar water heaters. Links to various sections are in this paragraph:

"Tables below and corresponding Energy-Savings to Investment Ratio (E-SIR) were prepared using with data
from a little-known report for the U.S. Department of Energy; summarized
below. The complete report, except for Appendices D & E, may be
  downloaded via these links:

Thanks John. These are excellent. Not so long ago 10 (yrs?) a hot water consumption study was hard to find. I'd think Carmine would be very interested in these too.

I attach a few others though: one from NREL, one from the UK, and
      a Quebec Hydro study.
