[Greenbuilding] dynamic benefit of massive systems

This would probably be with some insulation incorporated into the assembly.
I think all mass oriented (rammed earth, etc.) bit the bullet on that one. A
building with significant interior mass and insulated will perform better
and be more comfortable in a ventilated building than a comparably insulated
light mass building. The question is always at what cost. Mass is weight and
weight requires supportive structure. Easy to achieve in a ground supported
floor, more difficult with walls. There probably is a point where the
increase in mass and associated cost would be of greater benefit than
increased insulation due to the limitations of hrv. It may be that an extra
1/2” of gypsum interior is comparable and of more benefit than an extra ½”
of outboard insulation. I don’t know.

Good for fires and noisy neighborhoods as well.

Subject: [Greenbuilding] dynamic benefit of massive systems

I came across a claim that a 12" thick AAC block wall achieves R-22 (more
than double the rated per unit R-value of the material itself) in the
Washington, DC climate, apparently based on DBMS--the Dynamic Benefit of
Massive Systems. Having cut my builder's eyeteeth laying adobe bricks in
northern New Mexico, I am familiar with the concept of the flywheel effect.
I am also vaguely acquainted with some study done at the Oak Ridge lab on
this notion.

still, I am skeptical of the claim mentioned above, and would not want to
count on it for the not unusual three weeks of late January when the daytime
temp never gets out of the 20's

...am I alone?
