[Greenbuilding] exterior oil

Hi,
I'm building some really cool decks and fences using this extra thick
pallet wood (ironically from a vinyl fence company). Question is what is
the best sealer for it? One guy says it is poplar but I say it is pine.
Either way it is soft so I need a good protective oil. Cheap because we are
covering large areas. Suggestions?
