[Greenbuilding] Brick Veneer over Thick Foam

Eli- I had a similar situation on our house and couldn’t find ties designed for the purpose but this was a few years ago. My work around was as follows - I started with a 2x6 wall – this was covered by OBS sheathing and this by house wrap (well taped and sealed) over this were two layers of recycled  3” EPS foam (Formular 250 – ( 250 lbs/in2 )that were sealed at the seams and overlapped. These were “temporarily” held in place with washers and long screws into the studs. The brick (or in my case manufactured stone) after leaving a 1” air gap for drainage) was laid on the brick ledge. The brick tabs (6”  galvanized steel strips ) were then fastened against the foam by bending the end of the strip at a rt angle and screwing through the hole in the tab into the 6” of foam and through into the stud using 8” timber loc hex head screws. This both held the brick ties firmly and the foam tightly against the sheathing and house wrap with the bent ties acting as washers. The high compressive strength of the foam prevented the brick tie ( effectively a washer of about 1”2 ) from sinking into the foam.

It has been 3 years now and everything appears to be working as designed. I did an air leakage test before putting on the interior dry wall and it was 1.4 ACH. I have since plugged the electrical conduits and the conduits I used for the two mini splits I use for heating and cooling so it may be a bit better now.

I have adopted as my approach to insulating buildings to install a thick layer of foam outside the framing for walls.  Sometimes this is in combination with frame cavity insulation, sometimes not.  Outside this foam, I install a furring strip that I carefully seal at screw holes and screw through foam to framing for the purpose of mounting siding.  

 

I have a project that includes brick veneer.  Are there neat,  intrinsic methods for brick ties in the same situation.  The brick tie should not be required to penetrate all the way through the 3”-6” foam.  My intuitive approach is to treat just like siding by installing furring strips that the brick ties can be mounted to.  Because I have not seen this done that way, I am wondering if there is an already proven approach to this situation.
