Re the cost of metal connectors:
While our experience may not be usual, we built with large beams of Oak,
Honey Locust and Black Walnut all cut by my partner from our property.
These form the ceiling/roof supports. They were attached to the walls with
steel brackets bent and drilled to the correct specs by a local company
specializing in metal work. I don't think I paid more than $350 together
for more than 50 of these. Built over a decade ago probably somewhat
before the hike in raw material prices.
