It would be interesting to get a sense of the embodied energy in steel connectors vs. traditional joinery:

Steel: (including bolts): lots of shipping, melting, smelting, drilling, painting, galvanizing. 
Timber: variable shipping, running power tools to execute, a squillion Emails trying to convince the average engineer of the strength of traditional joinery..
