The design makes a big difference. Termite shields around posts, water
proof membrane over the individual wood members that are hidden by decking,
a design that has no exposed fir i.e. The decking acts as a shield. And a
good resin based oil sealer. There a bunch of good ones, all expensive but
worth it. Poor people the world over use old engine oil with great success
and smell - points for recycling and out of landfill I guess. Bioshield is
one resin oil from Germany but there are others. I've used Tung oil and it
works. Also used linseed oil but it isn't as durable.
