[Stoves] Charcoal price in Monrovia, Liberia

this piece of information came some weeks back from Mulanje, a small  
district capital in southern Malawi:

Crista. Managed to use a scale. My small plastic bag of charcoal that  
I bought for Kw20 (ca. 12,8 US cents) at the market weighs exactly  
0.319 KG.

In Mulanje people still use more firewood than charcoal. Firewood and  
charcoal is normally sold in daily rations that people pick up after  
work or just before cooking.

If my calculations are right this price of the small bag is equivalent  
of 400 US$ per ton. In the real urban areas it might be more, as  
Mulanje is close to the Mozambican border and the major part of  
charcoal comes across  a river through the informal market and is  
distributed further mostly by bicycle to the urban centers up to  
Blantyre (65 km away). will try to find out retail prices in Blantyre  
in November.
By law, charcoal may be produced by licenced charcoal-makers, so as  
such it is not illegal in Malawi. On the other hand as far as I know  
there were't any licences issued in the last 25 years, which basically  
makes the entire charcoal trade in Malawi with an estimated employment  
above 50,000 people illegal. A lot of charcoal comes informally into  
the country, I don't have indicative figures, I don't think anybody has.
