Thanks Nat for bringing up light. Often the stove is the only source of light in the home at night.
The first thing we stoves do is enclose the fire and limit air entry (and light exit).
When selling stoves to the Nama people in Namibia we had to orient the holes leading into the stove in such a way that the fire could be glimpsed or else it was simply not a stove or a fire or cooking as far as they were concerned.
The smoke for food preservation is most relevant. 50% of all food grown in Africa is already eaten/destroyed by pests. We should hardly be on the wrong end of that equation.
