Dear Frank,
haemoglobin in our red blood cells can absorb O2 as well as CO. If the
receptor sites of a haemoglobin molecule are occupied by CO, that
haemoglobin molecule can no longer absorb O2. O2 and Co compete with
each other for the same sites of attachment. Whether it is the CO that
attaches to haemoglobin or O2 depends upon the percentage of CO in air
(which normally contains about 20% O2). Therefore, an absolute measure
of CO in a sample of air is an academic or scientific value. But if we
wish to know its effect on human health, we must also know the amount
of O2 in that particular sample.
