Dear Paul

Another idea: try putting in a bolt to close alternate holes in the outer
ring on one half only, then look at the flames on each side to see if there
is a difference.

Staggering the hole sets seems to be getting air between the gas jets - that
is why they are burning well around the holes. Of course, there is air
coming down in the centre of the ring as well when the pot is off. What does
the flame look like when the pot is on?
