Thanks for the Forestner reference

are used to put in 'European' cabinet door hinges.

 

Re the centering of the hole in a long log: Looking at how the AmaXhosa
people make tobacco pipes, it was clear that they do not make the outside
diameter first. They bore the hole first, which might be 3mm in diameter and
300 long. After that, using the hole as a centre, the make it round and
centered.

 

Pipe can be made in the same way with perfect centeredness.
