In Ulaanbaatar as in much of the coal industry ash determination is made by all the labs at 830 C in the presence of air, volatiles having been determined at 420 or so. There is still come carbonates in the ash.
Prof Lodoysamba has constructed a few machines about the size of a CPU that can measure the ash content, directly by nuclear methods, of a sample in a few seconds without burning it. You can have one for $10k and a nuclear licence.
