ABOUT THIS PRESENTATION

 

Abstract: The human health risks, if any, of engineered nanoparticle (ENP)
exposure are unknown, and currently there are few exposure limits set for
nanoparticle emissions.  However, many companies involved in ENP research or
manufacturing believe it is prudent to perform a baseline assessment of the
worker air quality and compare the indoor and outdoor nanoparticle
concentrations. 

 

As a guideline, the  <http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/> National Institute for
Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed the Nanotechnology
Emission Assessment Technique (NEAT)- an approach in which an initial
semi-quantitative assessment is taken of both background nanoparticle
concentrations and suspected nanoparticle emission sources using real-time,
count-based measurement tools. If a large difference is found between the
background and the emission source, then a more detailed investigation into
the specific nature of the problem is warranted.  

 

In this presentation several instrumentation options to implement the
Nanotechnology Emission Assessment Technique (NEAT) will be presented
including: Option #1: traditional method using an Optical Particle Counter
(OPC) and a hand-held Condensation Particle Counter (CPC).  Option #2:  a
lower cost option using a CPC, diffusion screens and multiple samples.
Option #3: provides the most accurate measure of nanoparticle emission
available utilizing differential mobility analysis to determine in
high-resolution the particle size distribution in the sampled air.  Option
#4: very similar to the classic NEAT technique but features a new, lower
cost, battery operated nanoparticle sizer - the

down to 10nm.  Advantages and disadvantages of each approach will be
detailed. 

 

About the speaker:  Kathy Erickson has a degree in Material Science and
Engineering from the University of Minnesota.  She began her career in
semiconductor process R&D and was awarded a patent for a Germanium doped
BPSG oxide film for use as a dielectric layer which does not need CMP.  She
moved into the field of aerosol science in the late 90's and has had a
passion for particles ever since.  Working with TSI's engineering
development teams; Kathy has presented a number of papers on aerosol
instrumentation and applications.  She is currently an active member of the
American Association of Aerosol Research (AAAR).
