We are definitely on the same page.

I think this is the money quote:
"...the gases after the wire are cooler than before. both gas streams before
and after the wire will remain hotter than the wire so the wire will not
contribute heat to them."

It is a heat sink that is supposed to give radiant heat horizontally into
the room. In this case it is under the pot so there is a double benefit:
direct radiant heat and a lowering of the EA. I think there is combustion
taking place right at the pore creating backpressure, limiting gas flow. The
effect will be more noticeable as the hole size drops which is just what
Paul reported.

I find the analysis convincing.
