Stovers:
I am forwarding to this list a message on a free book that I just sent to two biochar lists. There is much less stoves content here than Biochar, but there is (as shown below) a nice chapter (#7) on char-making stoves by Rob Flanagan and Dr. Stephen Joseph.
Comments on the book would be welcomed by the primary book organizer - Dr. Tom Goreau

Two biochar lists:
This notice of a free book is being forwarded per request from Tom Goreau (see below). Tom is a very strong supporter of Biochar.of this (electronic) book - and was the primary organizer of its 40 chapters.
I have just downloaded the book.. To do the same you need to go to:
www.greenthindisc.com -
and then register (easy to do). You are not getting a disc - despite the name of the site. You will have access to single chapters, of which the following have a biochar connection:
6. UTILIZATION OF BIOMASS PYROLYSIS FOR ENERGY PRODUCTION, SOIL
FERTILITY, AND CARBON SEQUESTRATION
Robert Hawkins, John Nilsson, and Rebecca Oglesby
7. MOBILIZING RURAL HOUSEHOLDS TO REDUCE HARMFUL EMISSIONS, IMPROVE
SOIL FERTILITY, AND STORE CARBON INTRODUCING 3RD GENERATION STOVES
R. Flanagan and S. Joseph
15. GLOBAL RESTORATION OF PLANETARY SUPPORT SYSTEMS AND
INCREASING CO2 SINKS
Tom Goreau, Global Coral Reef Alliance
Sasha Alexander, Society for Ecological Restoration International
Andreas Kornevall, Earth Restoration Service
17. BIOCHAR CARBON SEQUESTRATION
Christoph Steiner
18. CHARCOAL TO REVERSE GLOBAL WARMING AND INCREASE SOIL FERTILITY: COSTS AND
BENEFITS
Alimasi Ainiwaer and Thomas J. Goreau
These next two are not Biochar - but have some useful information on the biomass resource:
19: PLANT BIOMASS PRODUCTION: A CRITICAL NEED AND OPPORTUNITY
Greg O’Neill, White Tiger Farms
38. INTEGRATED NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT OF COASTAL WATERS AND WATERSHEDS
Tom Goreau
This is not to say that the remaining 30+ chapters are not of interest to members of this list. For instance there are many chapters on the plant vetiver - which clearly has potential for Biochar.
This entire book will be updated later this year - as described below by Dr. Goreau.
Chapters 17 and 18 also appear as Ppts.
I hope we can have some discussion on anything anyone reads in this book.
Ron

Subject: Green Disc
Dear Debbie and Ron and Biochar colleagues,
The Green Disc 1st Edition, with about half a dozen articles on Biochar is now free on the web. Christoph Steiner, Stephen Joseph, Rob Flanagan, and others are authors on it.
Please send this information to web sites, associates, members, donors, and sponsors.
We are greatly expanding it for the 2nd Edition, to be launched in June.
We would greatly welcome the International Biochar Initiative as a sponsor. Sponsors will get their logo on the home page and clicking it will launch their web sites. Please contact Lon Gibby for more information.
We are also planning a separate academic book next year on Innovative Methods of Soil Fertility Restoration, to include papers of results of biochar work, invite your participation, and welcome your thoughts on potential contributors.
Best wishes,
Tom

No one can change the past, every one can change the future
Dear colleagues:
The UNCSD Small Island Developing States Partnership in New Sustainable Technologies (UNCSD SIDS PINST) is very pleased to announce that the 40 chapter 1ST EDITION OF THE GREEN DISC: NEW TECHNOLOGIES FOR A NEW FUTURE is now available in its entirety on the web .
This is a priceless resource for policymakers, funding agencies, students, and the concerned public to learn about innovative, proven new technologies that can be scaled from poor, isolated, rural communities to urban megalopolises.
While the focus is on Small Island Developing States, the innovative technologies shown are universally applicable in developing and developed countries .
If these under-utilized technologies were applied on the scale needed they would solve many of our most pressing global energy, environmental, ecological, and economic problems.
UNCSD SIDS PINST is also pleased to announce that the much bigger, more comprehensive, and more user-friendly 2ND EDITION will be launched at UNCSD in Rio de Janeiro, June 20-22 2012.
These developments are possible thanks to the hard work and many sacrifices made by the pioneering inventors whose work is featured and of our publisher, Gibby Media Group.
We look forward greatly to collaborating with UNCSD to make this launch in Rio de Janeiro a success in restoring our severely damaged planetary life support systems and transforming our world to a more sustainable, equitable, and just future!
We ask you to please circulate this important information to all your contacts who may be concerned about the future of our planet, and post links to it on your web sites.
Sincerely yours,
UNCSD SIDS PINST
THE GREEN DISC: NEW TECHNOLOGIES FOR A NEW FUTURE
Innovative Technologies for Sustainable Development, including renewable energy, waste recycling, water purification, ecosystem restoration, soil fertility restoration, carbon sequestration, shore protection, sustainable agriculture and mariculture technologies, etc. for economic and environmentally sound development and reversing global warming.
The 40 Chapter First Edition, released at the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in 2009 is now available in its entirety on the web.
The 60-80 Chapter Second Edition will be released at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro in June 2012.
