Crispin,
yes funny isnt it: These same 'ole debates from our peace corps days in the late 60's till now no matter where or what culture: Its still the same game eh ?

Give me five dedicated entrepreneurs working on whatever in response to their markets under (consciously or unconsciously) an umbrella of social and environmental sustainability, and favorable policy and no donor interventions screwing up their capacity and incentive to handle their realities,---- and you will see pretty quickly what real development is all about.
Link them as contributors and paid trainers (directly by the would be trainees) and watch it all grow.

Its a kind of sweet spot of development work really. Its taken me only about 16 years to figure it out and another 15 to get there.

Pressing on,
Richard Stanley

Dear Richard

I think you have eloquently and emphatically stated the case of different occasions and I encourage you to maintain the pace.

Technology adoption, which was much discussed tonight at dinner with 12 people from the EnerKey programme, is a hot topic these days. There is a push to understand what to do with the people whose aspirations far exceed their local environment. The politicians want to be seen bringing modernity to the masses, not little cooking stoves. There is a strong resistance to products from outside yet a desire to be seen to bring them in.

There a lot of balancing acts to be seen.

Appreciatively yours
Crispin
