Dear Friends

There is a new South Africa national standard in preparation which has some
interesting aspects relating to the minimum performance. It is called SANS
666. Ethanol Gel fuel is covered by SANS 448. There are quite a number of
safety tests conducted.

Some features:

The power has to be above 1 kW thermal output

The net thermal efficiency has to be above 22.7%

The CO/CO2 ratio (a measure of combustion efficiency) has to be below 2% at
high power

It must not be able to be refuelled when burning

It must has a flame regulator

There is a topple-over test involving a 10 degree tilt with a 225mm diameter
pot containing 3 litres of water on the stove, tilted in 4 directions 90
degrees apart, and repeated with no pot and an empty fuel tank

Surfaces that need to be touched when operating and adjusting it must not
exceed 42 degrees C

It most not have any sharp edges

If the flamer controller is set to OFF it must not automatically relight if
set to ON after 5 seconds.

There are durability and strength tests as well.

This standard is based on the paraffin stove standards for pressure and
non-pressure appliances and heaters: SANS 1243 and SANS 1906 respectively.
It reads very much the same and uses the same test equipment.

Regards

Crispin
