Ok heres a possible 2 buck fix for making consistently sized cubed briquetes :
It has Not been built, at least by us or any others we know of, much less tested out…

It's essentially a standard metal ice cube tray in a 2 x 4 frame with an insertable 2 x 4 on top for the piston?

• Perforate the molds of the tray with ⅛" dia holes, say about 6 per cube….
• The tray is then set down into a 2 x 4 frame such that the frame extends up over the lip of tray say about 2 inches.
• Fill the try with the slurry and screed the excess off across the frame top face ( as you would cement in a form).
• With the free 2x4 which has been cut to the interior dimension of the 2 x 4 fame – ie., cut to exterior dimensions (in plan view) of tray, insert it and apply even downward force.

• As with ice cubes, the finished briquette should tend to pop out due to draft angle fo the ice cube mold itself. Some blends will develop greater stickyness / wall adhesion of the material, so one might need to add a set of false bottoms attached to another board beneath the base. I drew a possible design for such (below), just in case…

With a blend of well pulped fibrous ag. residues, you will need about 10 lbs 4.4kgs of force per cube. With paper probably about half that. The necessary pressure over the typical ice cube tray is quite attainable by simply kneeling on the upper 2 x 4.

Final note this kind of press would work only with well pulped blends and well mixed ingredients, such that one can, with a few trys, determine just how much you need to pour in to get a consistent briquette cube over the whole tray.

Aluta continua folks,
