Josh:

I certainly want to be on your list of recipients, but think you should send to the whole list.

I learned va googling that you will be experimenting with a "drupe". I want now to hear what happens with avocado pits. I think we need really big TLUDS to make them work.

Others are plums, peaches, dates, mangoes and apricots. Mangos sound the most interesting of that list. None spheres, but also none are pencil-like.

There are probably experts around for each who can give the packing fraction (or void space and average path length so as to predict a "superficial velocity".

I hope all is gong well for you away from Colorado. You are needed here.

I just got a bunch of (spherical) cherry pits I'm going to try soon. Let me know if you are interested in the results....

Need to bring in one more variable: fuel shape. Imagine the fuel is pencil shaped. If placed vertically, they work fine to make char. If horizontal and parallel, they can block most vertical air flow. Anyone able to supply biomass fuel spheres?

Dear Martin,

I often determine the particle density here in the lab using free flowing
sand. If the particle density of the fuel is determined (g/cc) and you know
the weight of fuel packed in a known volume you know the volume of voids and
can determine the air speed - I am thinking.

I think in gasification they use the term "superficial velocity" a fictional
speed derived from the air volume and cross section of the chamber, the
actual speed of any given bit of air flow through the spaces will be much
higher of course.
