  Frank and list:

Need to bring in one more variable: fuel shape. Imagine the fuel is pencil shaped. If placed vertically, they work fine to make char. If horizontal and parallel, they can block most vertical air flow. Anyone able to supply biomass fuel spheres?

  # What diameter do you want? What material? Do you have a complete specification? How many tonnes do you want? How much are you willing to pay per tonne?

  Dear Martin,

I often determine the particle density here in the lab using free flowing
sand. If the particle density of the fuel is determined (g/cc) and you know
the weight of fuel packed in a known volume you know the volume of voids and
can determine the air speed - I am thinking.

I think in gasification they use the term "superficial velocity" a fictional
speed derived from the air volume and cross section of the chamber, the
actual speed of any given bit of air flow through the spaces will be much
  higher of course.
