Since safe water is critical for a crude but quick souce  google SODIS   solar disinfection.  

Take a 2 liter cola bottle partially fill with screened filtered water and shake like hell.  

Fill the rest of the way with more water and cap it,  then put  out in direct sunlight.  The combination of O2  

UV aunlight and temperature will pasturise the water to a safe level in about 5/6 hours--- more is better.  

If people can get a bunch of bottles going they can keep up a pretty good supply of drink water until a   

better solution arrives.
