[EPA Cook Stoves and Indoor Air]

While lab-based testing of cookstoves and fuels is a critical tool for evaluating performance under controlled conditions, field-based monitoring of cookstoves and fuels in homes is essential for understanding real-world performance and use. New and improved technologies and data collection platforms are transforming the sector by providing key field performance data to better inform implementers, funders, and policy makers.

Join the Winrock and U.S. EPA “Advances in Cookstove Field Monitoring” webinar on Wednesday, September 25th to hear from experts who are developing and applying new innovative technologies, tools, and methods to evaluate cookstoves and fuels in the field. Dr. Michael Johnson and Ajay Pillarisetti from Berkeley Air Monitoring Group will present on the Platform for Integrated Cookstove Assessment (PICA), Dr. Nithya Ramanathan from Nexleaf Analytics will present on the Black Carbon Cellphone Based Monitoring System (BC-CBM), and Dr. Charles Rhodes from RTI International will provide information on the MicroPEM™. Each presenter will explain the background and rationale behind developing these technologies/platforms, the intended uses and applications for each, and will share results and lessons learned from case studies and pilots in Africa and Asia.

Webinar participation is free. For the web portion, a high-speed internet connection is required. A dedicated phone line is required to listen to audio (the web portion does not include audio capacity). Additional log-in and call-in information will be provided upon registration.

Time: 15:00 – 16:30 (UTC)/ (GMT), which is 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT).

About the presenters:

Dr. Michael Johnson, has worked extensively on field-based methodologies to quantify outcomes of household energy projects, with an emphasis on monitoring instrumentation and study design. His peer review publications include articles on the development and validation of the UCB-Particle and Temperature Sensor, characterization of environmental monitors, as well as methods and tools for evaluating stove performance and linking it to indoor air pollution. He has also published papers on greenhouse gas emissions and stove performance testing, and several others on indoor air pollution, exposure assessment, and characterization of monitoring instruments. Dr. Johnson is a co-author of the forthcoming WHO Indoor Air Quality Guidelines and was on the core committee which developed the stove performance guidelines in the ISO International Workshop Agreement on Clean Cookstoves.

Ajay Pillarisetti, MPH, has extensive experience in standards based web design, programming, and server management. He has worked on household energy and health projects in Nepal as a Fulbright Scholar, in rural and urban India, and in the Western Highlands of Guatemala. Much of his work is focused on addressing the challenges of resource-limited exposure monitoring in the developing world and is currently investigating best practices for personal exposure assessment. He is in his third year of doctoral studies in Environmental Health Sciences under the guidance of Professor Kirk R. Smith at the University of California, Berkeley.

Dr. Nithya Ramanathan is the President and Co-Founder of Nexleaf Analytics, and an Assistant Research Professor in Computer Science at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). Dr. Ramanathan brings over 14 years of experience as a computer scientist, including her work in research and development at Intel and Hewlett-Packard, to the development of mobile phones sensing and analytics, with an emphasis on environmental and public health applications. Dr. Ramanathan received her Ph.D. in Computer Science from UCLA and holds a BS degree from the University of California at Berkeley in Electrical Engineering. She leads a number of projects with funding from the National Science Foundation, the Gates Foundation, Qualcomm, Nokia, the U.S. Agency for International Development, Vodafone Foundation, and the United Nations Environment Programme; additionally, she is a former Switzer Fellow and PopTech Social Innovation Fellow, and currently is a Rainer Arnhold Fellow.

Dr. Charles Rodes, is a Senior Research Fellow specializing in health-based aerosol exposure research. Since 1992, he has led research and developed programs that support an overall goal of developing stronger linkages between exposures and doses of toxic aerosols and adverse health outcomes. He serves as technical leader for RTI’s grand challenge R&D effort into biomass stove smoke exposures and environmental health studies. He is the lead developer for RTI's MicroPEM™ (PEM=personal exposure monitoring) platform, and is currently working with the Gates Foundation to build the next-generation MicroPEM™ device for use in cookstove exposure assessment. He is an active member of the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves and ISO U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to ISO/Technical Committee on Clean Cookstoves. Dr. Rodes holds a Ph.D. in environmental engineering and B.S and M.S degrees in chemical engineering.
