Aprovecho give us a test training a month ago in Antigua Guatemala, you shoul ask Michael Irvine for this results, but in the other hand a few topics you should consider
	* tipe of Wood
	* number of family member that live in the same house using the same stove
	* childrens under 10 eat less
	* cultural habits (ea. in some áreas of Guatemala people use more Wood to keep the house warm, than only for preparing food)
	* the of wood use changes in the dry season and rainy season,
at this momento we are monitoring use of Wood in rainy season in El Salvador will do survey in 130 families, if you think this can a usefull report I can send it to bioenergy list, Guatemala, Honduras and San Miguel de Allende in México will do the same in 2 months.

Dear Jock, (subject changed) and stovers,
Jock – a great suggestion to use the entire value chain. 
 
There is a layered system and a unit system and we seem to bounce from one to the other. The layered system goes like this:
 
1)    How much forest does a village use per year? To reduce this we need to know….
2)    How much does each household use (equals sum). To reduce this we need to know the difference in use for the ones using more and the ones using less. 
3)    Of this list (leave doors open, pre-dry wood, stove types, cooking more of a type of food …. , to reduce we need to zero in on each and optimize the process. Lets take stoves.
4)    For stove efficiency we need only two numbers; a) wood used per b) task completed.  We convert ‘wood’ to energy units’ for calculating purposes.
 
To go deeper…
 
The purpose of the stove testing is to compare and improve stoves  to optimize that part of the energy value chain.  Not to do real energy calculations because with all the variables that is impossible. 
 
1)    Wood Energy used:  We deal with little hot boxes for a short time where everything changes in seconds.  To use the least variables and simplest means the HHV is all we need on a dry weight basis. A calorimeter or ‘look-up’ is used for the HHV and moisture for dry weight. Using the LHV means we need to add hydrogen (another test variable) and not needed for the purpose of comparing stoves.  We need to subtract the energy left over from the total starting to get what was used. The simplest means I know of is using the volatile fraction (pipe method). We need a new word because it is not the ‘total starting energy’. Say ‘fraction of the total energy’ (FTV) used. This gives us FTV energy efficiency values (FTVEV). We can add to this stipulations like also; a) safe stove-must not tip over b) low particulate matter c) easy to use d) burns local fuel etc.  etc. But these are added requirements and not included in efficiency
 calculations. 
 
2)    Task Completed – depending on what it is.

It would be appropriate to take a whole systems, end-to-end, value chain analysis.
 
If a stove makes useful charcoal that increases crop yield and quality, or increases animal protein production, that might also move a farmer from just a consumer to also a producer, how to we value that as part of our analysis of the "value" of a stove?  What, for example, is the value of the end product of combustion?
 
Simply looking at energy in and out, or stack gases, or water boiling times, gives a very incomplete picture of the total value chain a particular stove/technology creates/sustains.
 
I suggest that it is important to look at the entire value chain, not just selected parts.
