Some people build stands for the sticks to rest on, but I've seen photos
with a lot of wear on metal wire style stick holders, and some of them with
the stick holding supports are too broken to be useful, or discarded
entirely. Some like the Ecocina has a large lip where the sticks are
supposed to rest that's integrated with the stove body. Plancha stoves are
also made more stable by building them into a long support, that also
supports the fuel. It could be that the preference for charcoal is more of
a preference for uniform, 'easy' to handle fuel, since most of the popular
charcoal stoves are relatively small and the fuel chamber is fairly stable.
