[Stoves] 18 sec.:hot, clean, syngas combustion

I removed the top plate from my large FXJ burner, replaced the 5 inch central pipe with a 3 inch tall pipe (copper), and added an off the shelf stainless steel drain strainer with an OD of about 4 ⅜ inches.

Removing the top plate increased the draft, thus increased the rate of pyrolysis, shortened the run time a bit, and, overall, made for a very hot run. The central pipe showed real thermal damage at the end of the run. See phone below.

Note the vigorous sound made by the very turbulent combustion.

You can see the drain strainer resting on an off the shelf 6 inch cooling rack.

Very few orange red flames went up the sides of the system. The amount of soot I would have normally expected from such a hot run was greatly reduced: Not eliminated.

The strainer was soot free.

Biochar yield was 19%.

It would be nice to have a 5.5 inch stainless steel drainer.

Thermal damage to the 3 inch tall copper pipe at end of a 41 minute run on 500 grams of hard wood pellets.

Questions? Suggestions?

Thanks for watching,

Jock
