Tumia kwa kupenda, lakini,  please mention Legacy Foundation as the source. We are a bit tired of getting ripped off for original work by this who have no connection to it other than to boost their own credentials. We have no specific charcoal tree source but like you, have seen the effects of divergent types of charcoal in briquettes and burned raw. Please do develop a charcoal briquette variety series and send it back out to the rest of us and we'll do same for boosting cookswell Jikos!

All should be familiar with incorporation fo charcoal dust and crumbs in the ordinary  agro- residue based briquette. here is a photo of some  samples we  collected several years ago, In the Bamaco samples (6 and 9 o'clock position) , ther are 25% and 40% concentrations of charcoal crumbs and dust  You cannot increase the charcoal to much more than  this because the   briquette ( held together by the fibers form the agricultural residers)  will no longer hold together (no matter how much pressure you apply).
Ironically, if you interrupt the fire beforef carbonization  the charcoal creates more charcoal so to varying degrees the process is self continuing

To the issue of charcoal from coconut husks, in Mombasa the amount of coconut husks is large but a system for collection and charcoal production need to be put in place.  I agree with Dr. Paul that use of a TLUD would be very effective for household level charcoal production.

Maybe we also need to look at the other component of the coconut tree, the leaves and the branches.

Dear Stovers and Biochar,
In 1999 or there about, I had the opportunity to work on the development of charcoal production from coconut waste in Mombasa Kenya. We used coconut husks, coir was very expensive and was being used to make some products like door marts and such.

I developed a process for producing charcoal from coconut husks and also briquetting them. I developed a retort that was running on some of the coconut husks to generate heat that is then used to heat the other coconut husks for charcoal production. The retort attained very high temperatures.

I even wrote a report on the process.
