Bjarne,

Thanks for highlighting us on these issues and hopefully someone with access to relieable testing services and proper equipment, could bring this further and confirmed, once for all.

Good luck with your pellet production in TZ.

We are using sawdust in Zambia, but will also consider different types of agri- and forest vaste.

Best wishes

Otto

We initially used Jatropha seeds directly as fuel in our gasifier
stove. We stopped that when we found that some of our people when
demonstrating the stoves over longer time, said that they got
headache and was not feeling good.

We then shifted to using pellets made from a mix of Jatropha press
cake and rice husk, mainly half of each on weight basis.

With use of these pellets we have not been having any complains of
headache from people using the pellets and stove.

In such pellets the content of Jatropha oil is also much reduced
      compared to Jatropha seeds.

However there can still be some risk involved.

We have therefore also reduced the use of Jatropha press cake in
      our pellets.

I believe that there are need for scientific studies of the
toxicity of Jatropha in relation to using it in energy
      applications.

      Bjarne,

Could you please explain your experience about the toxic fumes
from the Jatropha seeds, since I understand you also
make pellets out of it for fuel in gasifier units?

I have been very concerned and worried about those fumes from
Jatropha fuels, also when it comes to forced draft gasifier
        units.

        Regards

        Otto

          Hey James

I have tried to to make a Jatropha oil lamp.

At that time I found that back in time before the electrical
bulp was in use, People used oil lamp. Likely the best of
these lamps was based on the lamp developed by Argand.

I build one lamp based on his principle and it worked well,
however I stopped working on it as I got concerned on the
issues of health effects from gasses from the toxic elements
            in the Jatropha seeds.

            Dear list,

Does anyone have experience of oil lamps
(specifically Jatropha) that they could share with me
                please?

I'm involved with some work assessing the small-scale
production of Jatropha oil and it's use for lighting and
can't find much other literature on the issue. I'm after
a description of the design of a lamp that has a proven
performance, has achieved customer acceptance, and that
                is ideally commercially available.

Also, any help with an evidence base for toxicity
(emissions not fuel) and mosquito repelling properties
would be appreciated. Once done I'll feedback to the
list/website with any relevant material. Please reply on
                or off list.

              Cheers
              James Robinson
