Dean tells us that the Alliance raised 700 million dollars for stove projects. And I suppose it is going to subsidize stove projects. Is it only going to subsidize projects at the business level? That is, give money away to people claiming to start businesses and promising to be profitable? That is the standard American ideology. subsidize businesses. not consumers or workers.

What about those who need to subsidize stove buyers not stove producers? What about serving communities that need help buying stoves, if the stoves are to be what they really need, and they can't pay enough to make it a profitable business proposition?

It is very frustrating to see all this money flying around, to be on the ground providing a very good stoves to people who really need what you are providing, and to know that because you are not going to be a profitable business, you don't count.

I want to see more calls for proposals for helping people who need them, buy great stoves that are really appropriate and excellent, but too expensive for the very poor.

Hi All,

As many of you know, the yearly ETHOS conference (January 23-25) is located at NorthWest University in Kirkland, Washington. ETHOS was created 14 years ago to bring the lab and field closer together, to give field and lab workers a place to exchange knowledge and ideas.

This is an especially interesting year! The Department of Energy funded six projects to research and create 'Tier 4' stoves: biomass cookstoves that protect human health and address climate change. These projects will report their progress and 'Tier 4' stoves will be displayed and lit in the courtyard!

The Global Alliance has also accomplished so many things this year, just recently having fund raised 700 million dollars for stove projects. ETHOS provides a space for interacting and asking questions. What is happening with the ISO standards? What do the new WHO guidelines mean for stove projects?
