Dear Michael, Crispin and Stovers,
The following videos and photo link show how the Eco-Kalan Project in Negros Oriental responded to the devastation caused by Typhoon Haiyan (locally called Yolanda) in Cadiz Vieyo/Lacawon Island and Sagay/San Pedro Beach/Punta Roma in Negros Occidental:

STOVE COST TO REAP CANADA (Roger Samson, Executive Director)
REAP CANADA received donations for the Eco-Kalan Project to establish Eco-Kalan-C Kitchens and distribute Standard (family size) Eco-Kalans to devastated communities of Sagay and Cadiz on northern Negros Island. Canadian donations are tax deductible. REAP CANADA purchased the stoves from the Eco-Kalan Project at the following prices:

ECO-KALAN-C (commercial/institutional) $15.50 per set (10 sets for Sagay; 20 sets for Cadiz)
STANDARD ECO-KALAN (family use) $10.50 per set (500 sets for Sagay; 400 sets for Cadiz)

COST OF THE PERMANENT ECO-KALAN KITCHEN IN SAN PEDRO BEACH, OLD SAGAY: $1,500 CDN for building materials and kitchen equipment; labour was provided by the San Pedro Beach community.

SHIPPING COSTS (Eco-Kalans and Demonstration Equipment; Relief Supplies; Food and Kitchen Equipment; Baggage and Sleeping Equipment for the Eco-Kalan Team)

1. Land Transport from Dumaguete City (Felipa Beach), Negros Oriental to Sagay or Cadiz in Negros Occidental and return -- Army trucks were provided free of charge by the Philippine Army.
2. Pump Boats ( from Cadiz Viejo to Lacawon Island and return; 2 large pump boats (6 trips); 2 small pump boats (2 trips) -- the Philippine Army paid $125 for 250 presentation eco-kalans , food and relief supplies, kitchen equipment; baggage and beddings for 7-member Eco-Kalan Team.

DURABILITY OF THE ECO-KALAN AT FELIPA BEACH (CLAY FIRED TO 900 DEGREES CELSIUS)
REJECT KALAN: 6 years +
REJECT combustion chamber 6 years
PERFECT parilla 3 years+

Only the Perfect eco-kalans are sold. Rejects (with cracks patched up with epoxy) are used at Felipa Beach or are given to domestic helpers, pedicab drivers and immediate families. Insulating the eco-kalan with ash inside the space between the kalan and combustion chamber and the outside of the kalan protect the kalan and combustion chamber from damage.

We are working on some design changes to improve the durability and performance of the eco-kalan stove and will be requesting your comments and suggestions.

Regards,

Rebecca Vermeer

Subject: [Stoves] another rocket stove issue for discussion

I believe I may have brought up this issue several years back.

It seems one thing item that is truly needed is a simple inexpensive long
lasting
rocket elbow the can be built into anything----
cement and stone housing
plastered cow dung
wooden box with ashes
galvanized cylinder with glass wool.
whatever.

Fired ceramic, titanium, stainless steel all come to mind immediately. A
flat sheet foldable tabbed lockable elbow
probably would be small and light enough for world wide distribution should
be feasible. especially if made in say in India or china.

For organizations like Green Crescent, Red Cross or Fema these could be
stored and prepositioned for immediate distribution after major disasters
like earthquakes, tsunamis or typhoons.

I have seen and priced many fine attractive and beautiful stoves from all
around the world. Some of these stoves are
as cheap as say $20.00 or $30.00, then you find out shipping is say 100 200
or 300 dollars.

Welcome back to the 3 stone fire.
