Yes I once built a bimetal controlled  damper in an exhaust outlet.
The bimetal material is easy to work with. You can weld it, roll it, form it.
I have one strip about 1" wide and enough for a coil, I will donate to you if you want to experiment. I do not have the specifications of the material  but you could still get a feel for how it works.
Also I am retiring ad plan to bring some of my designs to market.
