Dear Friends

19 December is World Toilet Day, don't forget to thank yours.

Also please see the article (photo of James Robinson) with the dried fish. This article is on the innovative downdraft fish smoker and the retrofit adaption of its air mixing chamber ‎to existing smokers.

Tests of the fish by the food quality lab in Accra showed a reduction of 99% in PAH(4) was possible without changing the fuel or construction materials. This design is widely applicable throughout the world.

Crispin

Working towards SDG2: ZERO Hunger
2016 marked the start of the UN Nutrition Decade, recognising the role of nutrition in achieving the SDGs. At SNV, we tackle the malnutrition issue every day, from promoting nutrition-sensitive value chains in Ethiopia and using evidence-based advocacy in Rwanda to raising awareness in Ugandan and Zambian rural communities and addressing stunting in Lao villages through a cross-sectoral approach.

"Every person suffering from hunger is one too many"
795 million people worldwide don't have enough to eat and 2 billion suffer from malnutrition. We recently spoke with Gerda Verburg, Coordinator of Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN), about what action is needed to effectively address this issue. Read this insightful interview and also join our Twitter conversation about nutrition.

Toilets have the power to transform economies
On 19 November we celebrated World Toilet Day to raise awareness about the importance of reaching the 2 billion+ people living without a toilet. Our work in WASH increases access to sanitation, reducing disease transmission and untreated human waste and wastewater. This substantially improves lives and in turn, economies. Discover how it works.

Along the journey to 0% open defecation
260 billion US dollars! That’s what the lack of access to sanitation costs the world annually, according to the World Health Organization. In South Asia 44% of people lack access to proper sanitation. But innovative solutions are emerging, greatly contributing to our Journey to Zero. Find out more.

A cleaner & more sustainable fisheries sector in Ghana
The use of inefficient fish smoking technologies contributes significantly to Ghana's high deforestation rate. But this newly improved fish stove addresses the issue and is a great development for women's health and businesses.

Supporting Burundian cookstove producers
The prolonged conflict in Burundi makes local programme implementation difficult. But SNV Tanzania & EnDev found an alternative: 250 km from the border, in Mwanza, they are training Burundian cookstove producers so that the supply of clean cookstoves carries on in the country.
