Mike and all, (sent to Stoves List also because of the Stove focus.
They reply to their own Listserv.)

One TLUD residential cookstove produces about 1 kg of good char per day,
or 365 kg per year. Three families would make 1 ton of char per year.

TLUD stoves appropriate for this can be purchased for $18 to $30 each
(delivered, retail cost). So for 3 stoves, call that $60 to $100 of
stoves per ton / yr, with good life span (5 yrs?) and low mantenance.

So, $100 times 5000 ton of desired output would cost $500,000 for 15,000
stoves. That is 1/6th of the 3 million dollars mentioned.

I am working on a report from the Servals stove project in the Ganges
delta with 11,000 installed stoves, and growing. And it did not cost
even half of that sum because of other factors.

Stay tuned. Academic results take some time to get released. But it
all looks promissing. (I hope I have my numbers all correct.)

Oh, by the way, the issues of fuel supply, fuel transport costs, and
operational labor (cooks) and even char collection costs all make the
numbers look even more favorable.

It would sure be nice and would be appropriate is someone with the
million dollar budgets for char production would become more interested
in the TLUD approach. Oh, the money-managers want to know the
return on investment. Sorry, most of the benefits (both financial and
social) go to the impoverished people who can barely scrape together the
$15 to $30 to get the stove. But you can still get the char at a very
low price and then make money off of that.
