Dear Stovers

Today the Central Asia Mountain Project Alatoo received the two
demonstration stoves made in local workshops.

The refuellable Model 4 was really appreciated after demonstration. This
will be reproduced immediately and heading to the mountains for field
trials.

This is based on the GTZ 7 series from Ulaanbaatar (2010) and in this case
is made to fit under a local cast iron top. Here is the shape and size:

The elements of the stove are pretty obvious. The unusual thing is that the
pot hole on the left is a cover for the fuel hopper. There is a white chalk
line drawn on the side which is approximately the position of the angled
grate that drops fuel into the combustion zone (to the right of the
vertical line to the right end of the angled line). The top is 750x450mm.

The hopper is 165x165 and the burn rate drops the fuel about 30mm per hour.
Four hours after ignition this is the performance:

These numbers are on target and I recommend them when trying to create your
own high performance stoves. They are:

CO/CO2 ratio <1% (the indicated value is 0.04%)

Excess air 70-100% for coal and 80-110% for wood

Exhaust temperature at the roofline (or ceiling) 160˚C.

Efficiency >70% and <85%

The efficiency was not all that great because the heat exchanger was
shortened to reduce the length to that of the cast iron top. It was worth
it - the acceptance of the shape was largely based on its conventional
external appearance. Inside of course it is completely different.

Here is the stove with the top removed. The rope is the sealing material
between the top and the body. The hopper is, very importantly, isolated
from the rest of the stove.

The fuel capacity us 8.5 kg and the burn time is about 16 hours (as tested
on the weekend).

Regards

Crispin
