On a freshly polished 16 ga steel cylinder you can watch the pyrolysis front travel because of the oxidation spectrum. In ours the front shows up as being about .5” wide  - I haven’t thought to correlate it to a temperature chart. But we have used an infrared gun and commonly see temps of 300C, and I think up to 450C. Since the question has been asked, we will make a point to verify this information. 

We are also using thermocouples to measure pyrolysis temp in the center and find 700-800C to be common in a 6” diameter cylinder with fan forced primary air.
