Winrock/US EPA Stove Use Monitoring Studies in Guatemala, Vietnam, and
Malawi

  July 19, 2017
11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT)

In our sector, there is growing recognition of the complex, inter-related
barriers to widespread uptake and sustained, exclusive use of improved
stoves/fuels. Promising laboratory results showing significant reductions of
fuel consumption and toxic emissions are rarely reproducible in the field
when the stove is integrated into intricate household cooking systems based
on traditional burning of solid fuels. To achieve benefits, use of cleaner
and/or more efficient options must be sustained and account for a
substantial proportion of cooking tasks.

Come hear about Winrock and US EPA's work with Berkeley Air Monitoring Group
and three partners in Guatemala, Vietnam, and Malawi to assess and
understand patterns of adoption and use of cleaner and more efficient
cooking interventions.

Are you interested in finding out if the stoves you're promoting are
actually being used consistently in homes?
<https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/952020223019568385> Attend this
webinar to learn about the monitoring tools used in these adoption studies
(including SUMs analysis software); the findings of each study; and the
challenges and lessons learned along the way. We will also share
recommendations for implementers interested in undertaking similar studies.
Presented in collaboration with:

*	Berkeley Air Monitoring Group
*	StoveTeam International
*	SNV Vietnam

Ms. Charity Garland

Charity Garland is a Project Manager/Data Specialist at Berkeley Air
Monitoring Group where she manages and implements studies of cookstove
emissions, usage, and fuel efficiency; evaluates impacts of improved
cookstoves on household air pollution (HAP) and personal exposure; and
builds capacity while training local field teams in these techniques. She
completed her M.S. in Atmospheric Analytical Chemistry at University of
California, Berkeley, and her B.S. in Environmental Chemistry at University
of California, Santa Cruz. Charity helped design, oversee and analyze data
from the studies discussed in this webinar.

Ms. Katie Gross

Katie Gross has been leading and supporting Winrock cookstove activities for
the past eight years. During this time she has worked collaboratively with
the U.S. EPA to support capacity building and technical assistance
activities related to clean, fuel-efficient cookstoves and fuels with the
goal of increasing the capacity of organizations to produce and distribute
high-quality cookstoves that meet user needs. This includes development and
coordination of workshops, field studies and study tours on topics
identified as important to the sector. Katie helped develop the usage
monitoring workshop curriculum, and provided support for the field studies
discussed in this webinar.

Ms. Katie Laughlin

Katie Laughlin is the Executive Director for StoveTeam International where
she is currently responsible for the organization's consistent achievement
of its mission and financial objectives. In this capacity, she supports and
oversees strategic planning, program evaluation and monitoring, fundraising,
communications and administration. Multiple projects have taken her to
Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Katie graduated from the University of
Oregon with undergraduate degrees in Spanish and Political Science and a
minor in Latin American Studies. Katie coordinated the Guatemala field study
discussed in this webinar.

Mr. Daniel Salinas

Daniel Salinas is a Chemical Engineer with a Minor in Environmental
Engineering. He is currently a candidate for MSc. in Sustainable Energy
Technology at the Technical University of Eindhoven in the Netherlands.
Daniel has a particular interest in sustainable energy, global development
and implementation of energy-oriented solutions for developing regions.
Daniel worked with SNV Vietnam as an intern in 2016, leading the Vietnam
field study discussed in this webinar. He worked with team of SNV colleagues
in conducting, executing and assessing the impact of adoption practices on
the Advanced Clean Cook Stoves Programme in Vietnam.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) and Winrock
International have been engaged in the household energy field for many
years, including through coordination of the Partnership for Clean Indoor
Air (PCIA) and its 590 Partners working in 117 countries from 2002-2012.
Since the integration of PCIA and the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves
in 2012, Winrock and the U.S. EPA have continued working to increase the
exchange of technical information among public and private organizations
working in the global household energy and health sectors through local
capacity building, targeted technical assistance and field studies and
global knowledge sharing. The goal of these activities is to promote
effective approaches that lead to increased use of clean, reliable,
affordable, efficient, and safe home cooking and heating practices.
