Dear Nikhil

As far as I know all the stoves for that competition will be tested using current methods. I didn’t look at the details of where the testing would be done. Last time it was at the biomass stove testing facility in Brookhaven National Laboratory, Long Island.

I have not heard of a cooking stove test, and where the stove is dual use (which is nearly all of the freestanding ones) they do not test the cooking function, just the space heating and temperatures for wall spacing etc.

The alliance for Green Heat is very au fait with this matters.

Regards
Crispin

Crispin:

Aren't these for high-cost heat stoves and HOBs in the colder regions of US?

Unlike cookstoves, EPA has subject matter jurisdiction over these for setting New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) and may have shared enforcement jurisdiction along with states. It has gone through 30 years of research and regulatory development, and now that the Final Rule has gone into effect, it can seek State Implementation Plan development and enforcement. It also has legally established test methods and testing facilities.

This is not the case with cookstoves at all. EPA has no jurisdiction, in the US (and of course not the rest of the world). Nor does EPA - or anybody - have legally established test methods or legally approved testing facilities.

I would be glad to stand corrected - if Mr. Jetter provides a regulatory reference to cookstove testing procedures established under US laws or regulations.

Nikhil

Webinar announcement

Automated wood stoves:
technology, policy and barriers

Date and Time: Thursday, June 29, 2017 - 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM ET

Presenters: Dr. Ricardo Carvalho, Thermochemical Conversion Energy Laboratory; Scott Nichols, Tarm Biomass

Topic: The presenters will discuss technology that can be used to automate wood stove operation. Sensors and controllers can improve combustion efficiency and reduce air pollution. Automated controls can also improve ease of use and open the market to younger, more environmentally conscious consumers who want greater convenience, safety and smart phone connectivity.

He is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Thermochemical Conversion Energy Laboratory at the Umeå University (Sweden) where he works on the characterization of energy performance and emissions from different types of biomass stoves that can be used for heating and cooking in Europe and other regions of the world. His research has been focused on the design of testing methods that can applied to evaluate and optimize the real-life performance of wood-log and pellet stoves, through a better control of the combustion air regulation, in order to address household air pollution issues through a transition to more advanced solid biofuels and technologies.
