> On 5th June, the National Cleaner Cookstove Awareness Campaign was launched on World Environment Day (Open Day) by the Honourable Minister of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining, Bright Msaka. The event was a start of a series of district by district cleaner cookstove awareness campaigns organised by the National Cookstove Steering Committee. The Open Day was a free-public event which saw exhibitors displaying their environmental friendly products such as cleaner cookstoves, solar appliances, briquettes etc. Cash prizes were awarded to various stakeholders in the cookstove industry: the best emerging stove producer prize was awarded to Nkhweya Group from Machinga, the best stove producer prize was awarded to Alfred Chisale and the best retailer prize was awarded to Area 18 Filling Station. The event was closed with performances by Faith Mussa and Sonyezo who performed the Mbaula theme song titled "Ndapeza Mbambande". All in all, it was estimated that over two thousand people were in attendance for the Open Day. Alfred started his cookstove business in 2012 and in five years time, with his business acumen, he has managed to build a stand-alone business which employs 28 people. Alfred's story is a perfect example which showcases how a determined and hard working individual was able to implement the advice of NGOs to create a market for himself in the cookstove sector.
