Lighting a 'smokeless fire' was standard training for outdoorsmen when I was young. How do you suppose it is done!

Boy Scout Jamborees always include a big conclave around a central fire. It is top-lit to prevent (as much) smoke (as possible).

However, all said, top-lit = less smoke is not the same as developing a portable contained fire in a can.
