My scouting experiences can be described as 'two generations ago' and may be irrelevant to what is in YouTube!

Let's keep looking. This is an interesting topic. 

I wonder how the Chinese made coke in the 9th Century. I found a reference to its use as a cooking fuel.

I'm not doubting your personal scouting experience, but I'm not finding 
any evidence for its invariable use at scout jamborees, or in any other 
scouting context. All youtube videos of jamborees show conventionally 
lit fires, although one is a possible contendor, what do you reckon?:
