Dear Friends

I have received word from Prof Harold Annegarn that our devoted colleague Prof Philip Lloyd, the long-time chair of the Working Group of the South African Bureau of Standards TC-1054

He occasionally appeared on blogs as the self-deprecating "Nutty Professor".

Prof Annegarn wrote a few moments ago, "Our colleague Philip Lloyd passed away last night. He had had major heart surgery just six weeks ago, and had been in convalescence with complete bed rest."

He has also been serving as Convenor of WG1 of ISO TC-285, among numerous other activities. For many years he headed the Energy Research Unit at the University of Cape Town. Rather unusually, he was a physicist, a chemist and an engineer. His many activities are too many to list but included chairing the Chemical Engineer's Society of South Africa, creatively farming maize in the Orange Free State and once he entered the Monte Carlo Rally.

Your sincerely
Crispin
