Residents will also get direct cash transfers to allow them to buy the fuel they need themselves with dignity, instead of lining up for handouts as before. “The feedback from refugees on the fuel plus stove Inyenyeri solution has been nothing but positive,” says Jakob Oster, UNHCR Livelihood officer.  “We wish that more and more refugee homes experience the comfort of using clean and safer energy and we hope that this becomes a standard in all refugee camps in Rwanda."

The support from IKEA Foundation comes on top of their recent €3M Euro grants to Inyenyeri.  “The IKEA Foundation is keen to support clean energy access,” says Jeffrey Prins, program manager at the IKEA Foundation. “When you know that families, particularly women, in Rwanda are spending three to five hours a day collecting wood and that they cook in fumes, often with children close by, then you know that we can do better. Inyenyeri’s model does just that. Our commitment to our customers is simple: we will always do whatever we can to offer the best possible service. As a case in point, we heard from customers that the burn chamber on their stoves used fuel too quickly, so we decided to do something about it. We designed and manufactured a new, more efficient burn chamber at our own expense, and have begun delivering them free of charge to every customer.  They cut fuel usage by up to 30%, saving our customers money with every meal.

So far we have distributed to about 50% of our customers, and expect to reach the rest in the next two weeks. The new burn chamber might cut into our bottom line, but it's worth it to deliver the best possible cookstove experience.
