[Stoves] Charcoal producers protest ban

Dear Rogério ‎

What great news. I think there is abundant evidence that the the only way to manage the charcoal market is to legalise it. In country after country, those that choose good management do well and forests become sustainable resources. Where the opposite prevails, gangsters and officials collude to pillage the resources of the community.

It is refreshing to ‎hear some good news from Brazil about charcoal.

Crispin

Hello Teddy and Tom

We have produced a global review of proven sustainable methods for commercial production of woodfuels.

http://www.prolenha.org.br/images/arquivos/final-commercialwoodfuel-ks12-12_optimized.pdf<https://nam01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.prolenha.org.br%2Fimages%2Farquivos%2Ffinal-commercialwoodfuel-ks12-12_optimized.pdf&data=02%7C01%7C%7C4c7016e39d204e06053408d5678fc8f2%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C636528789603457391&sdata=rY7aeGI44HWlppkiFUewYB5TRr0MTuPt8DEDShM9xRk%3D&reserved=0>

When dealing with woodfuels, the key is to have "positive" government regulations, that foster sustainable practices.

In Southern and southeastern regions of Brazil, commercial charcoal is nowadays nearly fully sustainable, from plantations, funded after 3 decades of continuous forest replacement incentives.

Currently, we are implementing the forest replacement method in Honduras, among lime and brick producers.

The same model could be developed among charcoal producers.

Regards

Rogério Miranda

Teddy,

Many thanks for the pictures, data and comments. It helps to understand the context and interpret the news reports. The politics seem to be unfolding as you have described. There are interesting reports form Kitui and Tanzania now says that they have not banned charcoal but will try to control deforestation by other means.

Hi Tom -

Thanks for sharing! It's a good one to add to the list -

Seems the annual charcoal bans are making headlines again (if you google charcoal bans Kenya/East Africa there has been about one or two+ a year, every year for many years<https://nam01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.standardmedia.co.ke%2Farticle%2F1144004092%2Fforesters-launch-crackdown-against-loggers&data=02%7C01%7C%7C4c7016e39d204e06053408d5678fc8f2%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C636528789603457391&sdata=rU4QZZhA%2BqiTKDJsxQOEJv9%2BQao4HRHnfgu%2BdJh4lO0%3D&reserved=0> since the 1980s. again seen here<https://nam01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.the-star.co.ke%2Fnews%2F2017%2F12%2F15%2Fcharcoal-burning-use-of-powersaws-banned-in-kerio-valley_c1685488&data=02%7C01%7C%7C4c7016e39d204e06053408d5678fc8f2%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C636528789603457391&sdata=9AgiD6XksuDuZMK6JAyEf8NhH0M89k2bxNawUJ%2Fjed8%3D&reserved=0> and here in Uganda<https://nam01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.monitor.co.ug%2FNews%2FNational%2FWest-Nile-charcoal-ban-prices-rise-Nebbi-Town%2F688334-4225984-nh7jjtz%2Findex.html&data=02%7C01%7C%7C4c7016e39d204e06053408d5678fc8f2%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C636528789603457391&sdata=pTsGWKwcmA43DJNRZaD%2BZ%2B3u98rBlgoqBvNV9KBrtjo%3D&reserved=0> etc. etc.) But then, yet another Kitui charcoal ban ended in 2012 even<https://nam01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.the-star.co.ke%2Fnews%2F2012%2F09%2F13%2Fkitui-charcoal-ban-ends-this-month_c677846&data=02%7C01%7C%7C4c7016e39d204e06053408d5678fc8f2%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C636528789603457391&sdata=o1iHVIrcL0wYCLJ%2F9sRlNiCywyB9T63ln%2FSsvckC6nQ%3D&reserved=0>, and then in 2014 the newly devolved Kitui County Govt. released this Charcoal Act<https://nam01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fdevolutionhub.or.ke%2Fresource%2Fthe-kitui-county-charcoal-management-act-2014&data=02%7C01%7C%7C4c7016e39d204e06053408d5678fc8f2%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C636528789603457391&sdata=pgxxGdCqXMcIg4NBHy3uUI%2BJdWUoKpC29V5rZNG%2FRHo%3D&reserved=0>.

Interestingly enough with this recent Kitui case - I wonder what went wrong with the twelve Charcoal Producer Associations (CPAs)<https://nam01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.researchgate.net%2Fpublication%2F308120448_IMPACT_AND_ASSESSMENT_OF_CHARCOAL_MARKETING_SYSTEM_THROUGH_COMMUNITY_ASSOCIATIONS_IN_KITUI_COUNTY_KENYA&data=02%7C01%7C%7C4c7016e39d204e06053408d5678fc8f2%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C636528789603457391&sdata=8n392fhCvxBhsxdrtf%2F5Jmty%2Bor2C80WUFRFsS5xbf8%3D&reserved=0> studied in 2016. Although they still do have a pretty current facebook page<https://nam01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FKitui-County-Charcoal-Producers-Network-544526155702501%2F&data=02%7C01%7C%7C4c7016e39d204e06053408d5678fc8f2%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C636528789603457391&sdata=mEvH8Z23GDRJ44z%2Fif49%2FsPwqQVLRM49EBeeAis%2F1qo%3D&reserved=0>.

I hope this current ban is a temporary measure that they are doing to restore some order in their house and it will hopefully be the start of a county wide massive reafforestation program at least.

To answer your other questions anecdotally, I was in Kitui the other day on buisness and I stopped in for lunch at the Lakeside Butchery and happened to take these photos - as shown below the co-proprietor of this well named joint had a few 3 stone fires in a somewhat well ventilated outdoor kitchen - she also had a KCJ jiko that she only used for only chapatis and sometimes tea - they cook better on charcoal she said and a kerosene stove inside for morning tea. She was boiling a goats head and some tripes and various medicinal bark/twigs in the pot in the foreground for some ok tasting soup, I think it had cooked too long though, but then again her 14 year oldish daughter was manning that pot to be fair. She said she gets the wood from her and her families farm, the charcoal she buys for 0.50c a kilo or tin every other day- this particular area was not much of a commercial charcoal making place it seemed, most of the land was privately owned, demarcated and farmed.

And for your question as to ''What is likely to be the outcome of this ban?'' It's hard to say, there are so many variables in play but I know for sure that this goat below hopes the ban stays in place, if even for just one more day :P

Although of course that goat will most likely still end up in the pot as there is still more then enough charcoal in Kenya roast it and many more! (please see various graphs below)
