Dan,

I am sorry that I did not reply sooner.  I was studying your contribution to try to get the best idea of what you were saying, and other things crowded in.  It is always good to discuss biomass stoves with other experimenters of similar interest.

Your idea of spiraling tubes to increase the efficiency of preheating the secondary air interested me.  Several thoughts came to mind. 
1--Preheating the secondary air uses heat from the wood gas, cooling it.  Mixing them back together will give the same temperature as if the air was not preheated.  The advantage to preheating the secondary air is that gasses are easier to mix when they are of similar temperature, and more difficult to mix when they are of differing temperatures.  That is a good reason to preheat the secondary air.
1--The tubes may increase heat transfer, I don’t know.  It seems like it might work if the surface area between the air and wood gas is increased.  I have not done any tests about this so I cannot confirm.  
1--It must be considered whether the tubes increase the flow resistance of the secondary air.  This would effect the power level (more draft available to the primary air), and also the ratio between the wood gas and secondary air (clean burning). 
1--I have done considerable experimenting on using swirl to mix the gasses.  It does not help, and may hurt mixing by slinging the cooler, heavier air to the outer edge, like a centrifuge.  Mixing should be done before swirl is added, and the swirl should be designed to give more dwell time before the flame exits the stove.
1--As you say, a forced air fan may not be necessary.  It may work as natural draft.  
2—You will need more than a thermal couple, you will need a thermal pile to run a radio.  Check the power levels.
4—The capacitor will need to be charged.  Hopefully it can hold enough energy to run the fan for the duration of the burn, 30 minutes to an hour+.  TEGs might be a better choice.
5—Conservation of energy,  you cannot make 10 watts out of 5 watts.  When your volts go up, your amps go down, and watts remain the same (minus heat loss).  Power (watts) = (volts)(amps).

   It looks like ,you have lots of dreams on principles ,
But reality is mV for thermocouples and WATTS for ENERGY , with VOLT and low amps ,you light only dreams . So speak about a working realization…..
    At 12 y my dream was making a bicycle light ,as strong as a cars light with an induction coil and car bulb ……I could make 12 V  out of 6 V, but the light was lower …!
Why ? POWER is not transformed !!!

       Copper/iron constantan is the thermocouple with the most millivolt.     Ni/ CrNi most used .

    We think the burn-speed is most important for a TLUD STOVE  and see 3 zones 0-400° C/ 400-800 ° C/800°-1200° C .

In a SOUTH AFRICAN UNIV. You find Mr CRISPINS stove designs ! For the NGO world !Africa /Asia

I have been experimenting with TLUD's.
Using an insulating "jacket", i have been using ROCKWOOL with a wire mesh support, is an improvement.

My next improvements will be :-

1)  
SPIRAL outer Air-Channels ( TUBES ) for increased air pre-heating.
Also for creating a VORTEX ( CYCLONE ) EFFECT at the combustion site,
thus causing better combustion and a better suction of air into the TUBES.
This would also enable a more compact and stable TLUD,good for camping etc.

I will have to study some of my research into  
VIKTOR SCHAUBERGER's VORTEX and IMPLOSION technology.

There is a high probability, that with the correct adaptations, 
a FAN ASSISTED air up-draft won't be necessary.

2) 
A THERMOCOUPLE,which is very cheap to buy or very simple and easy to make yourself,
even from readily available scrap materials, e.g. GRAPHITE and ALUMINIUM.
This would provide more than the necessary power for a FAN, RADIO, TRANSMITTER,
LIGHTS,  BATTERY CHARGER etc.

3)
A SUPERCAPACITOR ( possibily ) instead of a BATTERY for powering the FAN when starting the stove,
also for storing excess electric charge,which can be used later.
A SUPERCAPACITOR is inexpensive and also very easy and simple to make yourself.

4)
Using a "JOULE THIEF" electronic ( Self-Resonant ) circuit(s) with 2) and 3) above.
This , again, is very inexpensive,simple and easy to make, even from scrap components.
With this type of circuit you can increase the electric voltage output to whatever voltage
you want, within certain limits.

Anybody, including you,can create a business making these TLUD's
with the enhancements i have outlined below.
I know that designs can be patented.

I am very open to donations for my present and future work.

I know some Swiss people who designed an Oil Light ( Kerosene, etc. ) with a 
Thermo-Couple built into the top, named LUFO.
This was based on a Russian model from the Second World War.
They patented the design, which had a radio and an electric power plug ( 7 volt ).
The United Nations said that they were interested.
All that happened is that they were "played-with" for 6 years.
The person i knew had a debt of CHF 400,000, after that "run-around".

Patents are an exceptionally bad idea for innovators with limited funds. Often Patents are ‘stolen’ and used without the innovators concent because the thief knows that the innovator does not have the money to take them to court.
